Greetings all,
I'd like to open a discussion on the newest refresh of the MikroTik hEX router and hear your thoughts about the changes. Since most of you are already aware, MikroTik's hEX range of routers have been overwhelmingly in demand for domestic and small business networking as a result of their impressive ratio of performance vs. price. However, with this refresh, I feel that there's lots to be discussed!
What's New?
1. New Hardware
The new hEX has more powerful internals, offering improved CPU performance and memory. This makes it even more suitable for handling greater speeds, especially for those who utilize gigabit internet connections.
2. Redesign
MikroTik has adjusted the design just slightly with a cleaner, more modern look yet still rugged and compact. It is small enough to be installed at home yet is not as noticeable.
3. Improved PoE Support
Among the features is improved PoE (Power over Ethernet) support. The hEX update comes with improved PoE functionality that allows it to easily power devices such as access points or IP cameras from the router without having to use an extra injector.
4. Improved RouterOS
With RouterOS v7, hEX now has access to a host of more sophisticated features such as improved firewall configurations, greater support for VPN, and more powerful routing protocols. It is suitable for those wishing to be able to test more features without going to a higher spec router.
5. Greater Cooling and Efficiency
The update includes a superior heat dissipating system, so it will remain cooler even with greater demands placed on the router.
Performance
While MikroTik is also renowned for its software features, this upgrade seems to integrate both hardware and software improvements that make it improved. Whether it is a home or small office environment, this router should be capable of managing anything from ordinary browsing to more bandwidth-intensive tasks like streaming and gaming.
Conclusion
All in all, the MikroTik hEX refresh seems like an excellent upgrade. It has everything that made the original so great but with a few very welcome additions. What do you think? Have you upgraded to the new one yet, or are you planning on it? Feel free to comment with your experience or any tips for getting it up and running!
